STUDENT BURSARIES

We are pleased to announce that a small number of bursaries will be available to assist with the cost of attending the conference for students whose papers have been accepted. Successful students will be announced prior to the conference, upon which students can pick up their bursary from the local organising committee. Conditions for a student bursary application include the following:

* your abstract has been shortlisted;

* you have registered for the conference;

* you are a member of (or are in the process of joining) the British Forum for Ethnomusicology.

The application round for student bursaries will open on 15 January 2009 and close on 31 March 2009. Received applications will be considered on the basis of the following criteria:

* you are unable to gain support from other sources, such as your own institution;

* the quality of the abstract/proposal;

* the likely costs for travel and accommodation.

An electronic bursary application form will be made available here shortly.

BFE STUDENT PRIZE

In 2009, the British Forum for Ethnomusicology will award the prestigious BFE Student Prize for the best student paper delivered at the 2009 Annual Conference.

Students wishing to enter the competition for the BFE 2009 Student Prize should (during the conference) submit a hard copy of their paper to the chair of the session in which they present. The papers will then be evaluated by a panel of judges and the result announced later in the year.

The prize for best student paper presented at the 2008 conference at Cardiff has been awarded to IOANNIS TSIOULAKIS, PhD Candidate in Ethnomusicology at Queen's University Belfast, for his paper 'Working and Playing: Conceptions of Labour and Creativity among Jazz Musicians in Athens'. The judges commended the paper for its carefully constructed argument, sound methodology, clear and engaging presentation of thought-provoking material, and effective balance between sensitive ethnography, engagement with theoretical frameworks and original insights.
